Yorkhill goes for Kerry National
The enigmatic Yorkhill is Just One of 3 Coaches for Willie Mullins at the Guinness Kerry National at Listowel.
The winner trainer asserted back-to-back renewals of this esteemed handicap at 2005 and 2006 with Euro Leader and Bothar Na, but has not managed to add in a race which carries a complete prize fund of 200,000 euro because to his tally.
A double winner at the Cheltenham Festival, Yorkhill looked a celebrity in the making after winning the 2017 JLT Novices’ Chase, however, has emerged a shadow of his former self within the past couple of years.
The nine-year-old promised his first victory since that Festival triumph when shooting a conditions chase at the Galway Festival a month and bids to follow up on Wednesday in the hands of Paul Townend.
Mullins’ assistant David Casey said:”You’d prefer not to own top-weight, obviously, but he looks in good form.
“Going back left-handed is going to suit him much better than racing right-handed in Galway, even though he won.
“We have been happy with him because, so fingers crossed he’ll run well.”
The Closutton handler additionally saddles Some Neck (David Mullins) – three seasons supporting Yorkhill when runner-up at Galway – and also the six-time winner Pravalaguna (Danny Mullins).
Casey added:”Some Neck ran well behind Yorkhill in Galway, and moving an excess couple of furlongs should match him. We’re also placing a set of blinkers on him to try and eke out a little more improvement.
“Pravalaguna worked nicely in the Galway Plate (finished seventh) before winning over battles in Cork. The trip should suit her well, and she needs to have a good probability of getting in the cash when she runs up to her Galway Plate kind.
“They have opportunities, but it’s definitely a competitive race.”
The champion coach’s excellent rival Gordon Elliott also has a powerful hand, with A Toi Phil (Jack Kennedy), Barra (Hugh Morgan), Ravenhill (Denis O’Regan) and Swingbridge (Andrew Ring) all featuring in an 18-strong field.
Elliott, who claimed consecutive renewals of the Kerry National with Wrath Of Titans along with Potters Point in 2016 and 2017, stated:”It’s been a terrific race for us. There is prize-money that is excellent, and it is an unbelievable race – it’s among those handicap chases that you would like to win every year.
“It is definitely going to be a difficult race. Should have a wonderful chance if the floor is okay.
“Barra looked like she was likely to acquire the Midlands National and fell at the past.
“Using A Toi Phil, the trip will most likely be a concern.”
The market is led from the Enda Bolger-trained and JP McManus-owned Movewiththetimes.
Formerly trained in Britain by Paul Nicholls, the eight-year-old fell when joint-favourite to the Galway Plate in his first start to Bolger, but bounced back to win against a chase at Killarney after his first victory in almost three years.
Bolger stated:”He’s a wonderful racing weight and he is going into the race in good shape.
“It was important for him and important for us that he’s his head facing Killarney – hopefully it will improve his confidence.
“This is really a 200,000 euro race, and everyone will soon be champing at the bit – but so long as they don’t get too much rain, hopefully he will run well and get into the framework”
The McManus silks are also transported by Joseph O’Brien’s All The Answers, the Tom Mullins-trained Oscar Knight and Drumcliff in Aidan Howard’s lawn.
The last winner of the race was the Ferdy Murphy’s Macs Supreme at 2000, and there are two raiders in David Pipe’s Dell’ Arca and Neil Mulholland’s Shantou Village – fifth and fourth in the renewal of the past year.
Other hopefuls include James Motherway’s Na Trachtalai Abu Henry de Bromhead’s set of Valseur Lido and Poker Party along with the Eric McNamara-trained duo of Internal Transfer and Dark Scorpion – although the latter is not guaranteed a run, as initial book.
