The six best horses of 2018: Justify has company at the top
In a span of 112 weeks and six races, Justify stunned the horse racing world in 2018 by winning the Triple Crown. He is a straightforward choice for one of our six favourite horses of this year but other star horses also join the best-of list for the year which has been, 2018.
Justify
Justify began his career on Feb. 18, dominated the three-year-old branch and became the thirteenth horse in history to win the Triple Crown from the process. In July, it was reported that the colt sustained a foot injury and he had been retired. During his brief career, Justify also broke the curse of Apollo, becoming the first horse since 1882 to win the Kentucky Derby while not racing as a 2-year-old. It appeared Justify would have Horse of the Year honors wrapped up yet another celebrity of 2018 emerged to give the Triple Crown champion a run for its name — Accelerate.
Accelerate
The 5-year-old son of Lookin At Lucky raced seven times in 2018, from Feb. to Nov. and notched six wins at that period of time, with five of these being Grade-1 victories. In his final race of 2018, Accelerate drew away to a one-length success in the Breeders’ Cup Classic on Nov. 3. He also joined the ranks of Affirmed, Alysheba and Cigar, by winning four Grade 1 races at the space of 1-1/4 miles on a dirt surface in one calendar year. But Accelerate had to talk about the honor of having the most Grade-1 wins in 2018 using a filly called Monomoy Girl.
Monomoy Girl
She started her career with three straight victories, the next being a hard-fought struggle with Wonder Gadot at The Kentucky Oaks in which she prevailed by a half length. She followed up that effort with wins at the Grade-1 Acorn Stakes at Belmont and the Grade-1 Coaching Club American Oaks in Saratoga.
Making her next start from the Cotillion Stakes at Parx, Monomoy Girl took control in the stretch and crossed the wire first but was disqualified and placed second for interfering with Midnight Bisou, who was awarded the win. Her next beginning was in the Nov. 3, Breeders’ Cup Distaff, where she was out to hold off Wow Cat with a length for a season ending score. She finished the year with six victories, five of these this Grade-1 variety and the disqualification at The Cotillion was her only loss of this year. Monomoy Girl is a certain thing for your 2018 Three-Year-old Filly Champion and is expected to continue racing in 2019.
Gun Runner
On Jan. 25, 2018, Gun Runner has been voted American Champion Older Dirt Male Horse, as well as Horse of the Year for 2017. Two nights later, Gun Runner entered his last and final race, The Pegasus World Cup. He responded with a 2-1/2 length win and closed out his career with a five-race winning series, all of these Grade-1 events.
The $7 million winner’s cut of the bag pushed his lifetime earnings to $15,988,500, which ranks second on the all time earnings record one of North American established thoroughbreds. After the Pegasus World Cup, Gun Runner was retired to stud at Three Chimneys Farm and throughout the 2018 breeding period that he coated 172 mares. His first foals will soon be heading into the racetrack in 2021.
Enable Her lone U.S. start was a good one, winning The Breeders’ Cup Turf and creating history by being the only horse to win The Prix De L’Arc de Triomphe and the Breeders’ Cup Turf in precisely the same season. She remains undefeated in seven starts in the space of 1-1/2 miles. The Breeders’ Cup Turf was only her third start of 2018 because of missing training time in the injury and she’s now won nine races in a row.
Permit has only lost once in her profession and is only the fourth filly to acquire The Breeders’ Cup Turf. She has 10 wins and a third place finish from eleven begins with career earnings of $10,705,631. Permit is expected to continue racing in 2019, after a brief break.
Winx
This woman has only been rolling along, as she continues a 29-race win series with 22 of those being Group-1 competitions. She made history in October, when she recorded a record-breaking fourth Cox Plate win. Winx has now won 33 of 39 races, with three second-place finishes and has amassed $22,934,925 in career earnings.
In the World’s Best Racehorse Rankings of 2018, Winx was co-ranked with Cracksman as the best horse in the world. In 2017, she was inducted to The Australian Racing Hall of Fame, just the horse to earn this honor while still in practice. She won the 2018 Secretariat Vox Populi Award, the top pick among race fans in 60 distinct countries.
