People Are Making Tons of Money Betting on (Fake) Pro Wrestling

Pro wrestling is fake. Sad, but true. Hulk Hogan didn’t develop 24-inch biceps by taking vitamins, and Andre the Giant was not a truly 500-pound giant. Regardless of the fixed nature of the sport, between January and April each year, referred to as”The Road to WrestleMania,” tens of thousands of wrestling fans forfeit their hard-earned dollars and put online bets on fixed WWE pay-per-view matches. Sure, gambling happens year-round, but during those four weeks, the action is hot on a”game” as predetermined as an Arnold Rothstein poker match.
A number of online sports books, such as 5Dimes and Bodog, have been accepting bets on pro wrestling for decades, and recently pro wrestling insiders have begun to notice an unsettling trend. You see, unlike boxing or MMA, the odds for pro wrestling matches (favorites vs. underdogs), reverse in such a manner that professional wrestling journalist Dave Meltzer, who has been covering the business for nearly 30 years, is convinced insiders are pulling the strings. “If you’re smart and you know people,” says Meltzer,”you can make money as you’ll know what the results are.”
For example, during the WWE’s”Tables, Ladders, and Chairs” pay-per-view last December, just hours before the main event between John Cena and Randy Orton, something unusual occurred. John Cena, the WWE’s biggest star and the”good guy” was a clear favourite going into the series. But just hours before the game, Randy Orton, the”bad man,” shifted to a 750-point favourite. In the real world, this kind of movement on the lines will not happen without one of those competitors breaking a leg, literally.
“Smart money,” that is gambling with insider knowledge of their outcomes, shifted the balance in Orton’s favor. And the experts, including watchdog blogs like WWE Leaks, all appear to think that WWE workers, or additives inside the business, are responsible for the shift in the likelihood. Not only does”smart money” manipulate the odds on the various online sports publications, it also makes for a shitty experience of seeing a show where the script has leaked each and every time.
It actually took the WWE them nearly six months to realize, through a Deadspin article that raised a few eyebrows this past year, their narrative results were being leaked. Nobody knows for sure who’s responsible, but a mysterious Reddit consumer, who the WWE referred to as a”modern day Nostradamus,” appears to have a fantastic idea. Going from the nonsensical alias Dolphins1925, the accounts has been able to forecast the outcomes of each WWE pay-per-view match since February of the year with near 100% accuracy.
In accordance with Dolphins1925, who went up to posting his own manifesto to justify his spoilers, someone within the WWE is leaking the results straight to him via a connection. His results are posted in the favorite Squared Circle Prediction Series of Reddit. Meltzer, who promises to have a fantastic idea who Dolphins1925 really is, seems certain that the Reddit consumer is the real thing. “He has a connection,” says Meltzer, who also tells VICE the WWE would fire the leaker, presuming they find the mole.
But that’s just it–the WWE does not seem to care about match outcomes being leaked. No action was taken, publicly that’s, and if asked for a comment, the WWE refused to acknowledge the problem with any seriousness.
