Owen Farrell working on World Cup tackle technique
His address technique has been corrected by england captain Owen Farrell of falling foul of World Rugby’s crackdown in fear.
Farrell had been guilty of reckless no-arms challenges against South Africa and Australia last autumn – though he escaped penalty for the two – to increase worries over his manner of stopping opponents.
World Rugby are determined to rid the game of contact and also in May issued a directive clarifying the process for officiating tackles and shoulder fees, such as the broader usage of cards.
While England head coach Eddie Jones is concerned that matches danger being”ruined” by a bad decision by officials, he’s also seen the value in optimizing Farrell’s approach.
“Owen is not overly concentrated on that region, but he has made some adjustments,” said defence coach John Mitchell.
“John Carrington, our strength and conditioning coach, will also be my support on defence and he is very good at working on undertake technique. Some adjustments have been made by them based on that [autumn ].
“There may be mitigating circumstances, but if your hands are facing your shoulder you’ve got a better likelihood of creating a suitable wrap handle.
“If your shoulder is ahead of your hands, then the law doesn’t look after you really well.”
Mitchell insists on the way in which the officiating will perform in practice each team will enter Japan 2019 with a sense of uncertainty.
“It is at the back of everyone’s mind and there’s some apprehension around it,” Mitchell added.
“You are just going to have to deal with anything that happens. There’ll surely be some apprehension – ‘OK, is it going to be like this?’ .
“You’d love to believe that since then there has been learning, a little bit more common sense and you do hear the phrases’mitigating circumstances’.”
England start their World Cup campaign against Tonga at Sapporo around September 22.
