Owen Farrell working on World Cup tackle technique
His technique has been corrected by england captain Owen Farrell in dread of falling foul of World Rugby’s crackdown on play.
Farrell was guilty of reckless challenges against Australia and South Africa last fall – although he escaped punishment – .
World Rugby are determined to rid the game of touch and in May issued a directive clarifying the process for officiating tackles and shoulder charges, such as the wider usage of cards.
While England head coach Eddie Jones is worried that games risk being”ruined” by a poor decision from officials, he has also seen the importance of optimizing Farrell’s approach.
“Owen’s not too focused on that place, but he has made some adjustments,” said defence coach John Mitchell.
“John Carrington, our strength and conditioning coach, can be my support on defence and he is very good at working on tackle technique. Some alterations have been made by them based on this [fall ].
“There can be mitigating circumstances, but when your hands are facing your shoulder you’ve got a better chance of creating a suitable wrap tackle.
“If your knee is forward of your palms, then the legislation doesn’t look after you really well.”
Mitchell insists over the way in which the officiating will perform in practice each team will input Japan 2019 with a sense of uncertainty.
“It’s at the back of everybody’s mind and there is some apprehension about it,” Mitchell added.
“You are only going to need to deal with whatever happens. There will definitely be some apprehension – ‘OK, is it going to be just like this?’ .
“You’d love to think that because then there was learning, a tiny bit more common sense and you will hear the words’mitigating circumstances’.”
