Lionel Messi says he would have”loved” for Neymar to return to Barcelona as his arrival would have”improved our chances of achieving our objectives.”
Neymar, 27, joined Paris St-Germain in Barcelona at 2017 for a world record fee of 222m euros (#200m).
“He was desperate to come back,” Messi told Spanish newspaper Sport. “I don’t know whether the club actually tried or not.”
Neymar scored 105 goals in 186 matches to the club between 2013-2017, and includes 51 goals in 58 matches for PSG.
Though it has been indicated that neither club was convinced that another was committed to making a offer the Brazil worldwide was linked with a return to Barcelona during the transfer window.
“I would have loved to have Neymar back,” said Barcelona captain Messi, 32. “I understand those people that are contrary to his return and it’s clear for what happened with’Ney’ and also the way that he left.
“But considering it on a sporting level, I think Neymar is among the greatest players in the world and having him in our team would boost our odds of achieving our goals.”
Messi denied that the Barcelona players requested the team to sign Neymar, including:”We gave our opinions of whether it would be good if he came or not but we never said they had to sign him”
Despite missing out on playing alongside the Brazilian again, Messi stated he was”not disappointed”, adding Barcelona have a”magnificent squad and can accomplish everything without him.”
The Argentine forward united Barcelona in 2001 and his contract expires at June 2021.
“My thought is to stay here for so long as I am capable of playing at the necessary level and my body allows it,” he added.
“This is my residence. I do not plan on moving to anyplace as long as we keep winning and competing.”
