NBA Southwest Division: Houston Eyes Three-peat
If it was not to an house record for the San Antonio Spurs last year, the Houston Rockets could have turned into a runaway train at the Southwest Division. Because it was, that the Rockets won their second straight division title with a list and a five-game guide on the Spurs. The rest of the division ended 20 games back together with equivalent 33-49 records. Houston is atop the oddsboard to three-peat.
Online sportsbook BetOnline has the Houston Rockets as the favorite at -280 to win the Dallas Mavericks at +1100 the Southwest Division followed with the San Antonio Spurs at +400, the New Orleans Pelicans in +1200 and the Memphis Grizzlies at +15000.
The Rockets put together a powerful 2018-19 campaign that saw them win the division move 53-29 and finish fourth in the West. They were finally knocked off by the Warriors at six games at the Conference Semifinals. They return the majority of their lineup with the change coming at the point guard position. Chris Paul is out and Russell Westbrook is in, since they played in Oklahoma City in 2011-12, reuniting with Harden for the very first time. I really dont foresee a lot of change from last year and Houston must collect more or 55 wins again in 2019-20.
It was Dr. Jekyll Mr. Hyde for the Spurs last season in their house and away splits. While on the road it went 16-25 In the home, San Antonio travelled 32-9. As their starting five is still good but not wonderful, what makes the Spurs an team is their depth. If they turn to their own bench there is not a lot of drop off which makes them unsafe for the period of their games, or should they would like to rest players or harms. Search for Dejounte Murray to blossom San Antonio and once more as the point guard will be a challenging squad, but I do not believe it has to get to Houston.
Although that may qualify for a ribbon dallas is the team in the Southwest Division, its not enough for the branch name. In the preseason, shooting guard Luka Doncic and electricity forward Kristaps Porzingis should be a lively duo this year and are revealing some chemistry. The starting five would be decent middle of the pack depth will be an issue, although Id say if there has been an accident to one. Mavs are going to take a step forward but will be on the outside looking in on the playoffs.
New Orleans will be a team to watch this year, but dont expect since the West is really tough. The Pelicans additional Lonzo Ball along with Brandon Ingram in the trade which saw Anthony Davis visit the Lakers. In Addition, New Orleans landed the Zion Williamson out of Duke together with the first selection. There are some pieces with Jahlil Okafor, JJ Redick and ETwaun Moore as well as Nickeil Alexander-Walker from Virginia Tech. Interesting up and coming staff but not one to battle for the division title.
It is going to be a continuing battle for Memphis this year, but they should have some excitement with select Ja Morant at point guard. Theyre though, finding wins may be tough to do an athletic team that wont be a walkover that is whole. In addition, there are a few depth players when the novices are napping, especially to assist: Jae Crowder Tyus Jones and Andre Iguodala. That is about it from the Memphis squad, although I look forward to seeing Morant linking with Jonas Valanciunas under the rim.
