West Bromwich Albion stayed high in the Championship table after a late Hal Robson-Kanu winner at Middlesbrough.
Middlesbrough had the pick of the chances in an uneventful first half with George Saville viewing his effort cleared off the line from Kyle Bartley.
However, Robson-Kanu was to place the league leaders at front, tapping the ball .
And also the Baggies held on to move two points clear from Leeds.
West Brom went into the break near the peak of the Championship following a performance to defeat Cardiff 4-2 in The Hawthorns.
But they were disjointed using Middlesbrough as Sam Johnstone rescued Saville’s bounce rid off the ground opening the scoring in the conclusion of a cagey first half at the Riverside.
Matheus Pereira attempted a spectacular overhead-kick from the cross of Grady Diangana but Darren Randolph was equivalent to it until a stinging campaign was parried by Johnstone as either side enhanced at the beginning of the second half.
Boro had a opportunity to open the scoring 15 minutes out of time, but the ball crushed above after the cutback of Ashley Fletcher.
Plus it was West Brom that the left with all three points thanks to Robson-Kanu, while Boro dropped to 21st.
Middlesbrough manager Jonathan Woodgate told BBC Tees:
“We created numerous opportunities, which we need to choose. That is what it’s all about, putting the ball at the back of the web and making chances and we did not do that
“They dominated possession but we went toe to toe with a team that’ll likely go up – they have got some amazing players but that I thought we played extremely well. If we perform like this and create chances for this, we’ll be fine.
“I can not remember a real save that Darren Randolph needed to create in the match. I thought we deserved to win the game, we ran them all the way and that was a functionality miles better than the performance against Birmingham.”
West Brom manager Slaven Bilic said:
“”It is pressure up there. Naturally, it is a pressure. The more you win that adds to the pressure and the closer you’ll be to the table’s peak.
“Middlesbrough aren’t confident and exactly what they need is a couple of wins. They are battling hard and they gave us a game that is challenging. They will take action, if they continue then they will be out of trouble very soon and I don’t have any doubt.
“Make no mistake, we knew what type of game we anticipated and it had been the one we didn’t want. We’re ready for that.
“They defended in numbers but using higher quality and quantity of strikes, then sooner or later you may get superior chances. That is exactly what happened”
