Mets vs. Royals MLB Pick – August 18th
The New York Mets responded on Saturday Following a lackluster effort Friday night in Kansas City.
Jacob deGrom spearheaded the trip for the Mets, as he allowed just 3 hits and 1 earned run from the 4-1 triumph. The Royals would be the first to strike in the bottom of the 4th, but that was all they needed to observe last night. Jakob Junis was tagged for 3 earned runs to give the Mets management of the contest.
It was a needed win to find the Mets back on course following an abysmal showing at the sport ahead. The Mets were also in danger of losing their fifth game in six trips. This after going 15-1 to get back into the wildcard hunt. They are in a delicate place at this time. Going 15-1 isn’t easy, though it had been against poor competition. So, sustaining that powerful push is even harder, which they’re likely to need more of.
The only guarantee for the Mets at this stage is they won’t be winning the NL East. That boat has come and gone to the Mets. They’re currently 9 matches back of the Braves in the division, but are living in a competitive race to go to the Wild Card Game. The Phillies, Brewers, and Cubs are all ahead going into Sunday. Two games is what the Mets have to concern themselves with now, but it’s likely to be harder than it seems to conquer that guide.
With their turning, it’s within reach to the Mets, though. DeGrom was wonderful yesterday and Zack Wheeler will be looking for much more of the exact same this afternoon. Wheeler is coming from one of his roughest starts of the year, so we’ll see how he reacts at KC here. The Royals are advised to provide Glenn Sparkman the starting nod at home. Zack Wheeler has been the subject in case a multitude of trade talks leading up to the deadline. It was difficult not to listen to trade rumors without even hearing the title Wheeler. From the blue, though, the Mets chose to be both buyers and trade for Marcus Stroman in the Blue Jays. The sole member of the rotation who ended up getting moved was Jason Vargas to the Phillies. Wheeler responded to the news of staying together with the Mets well.
He didn’t allow a run in two straight matches, with gone 15 innings without allowing an end to the opposition. That came crashing down in Atlanta, where Wheeler had been labeled for 5 earned runs and 12 hits in 5 innings against the Braves.
Regardless of the bad outing, Wheeler has been accountable for an ERA of 2.25 in his previous three starts. Wheeler has little expertise against this roster. He’s held Alex Gordon and Billy Hamilton to a combined batting average of .125, however he hasn’t faced any other Royals.
No Met comes with an at-bat from Sparkman in their careers. With just 3 starts a season ago, this is actually his first time getting fulltime action from the significant leagues. Sparkman will soon be making his 16th start and 24th appearance of the season on Sunday against the Mets. He has not demonstrated he deserves a spot in the rotation in 2019. Sparkman enters this competition with a 5.45 ERA and also 1.44 WHIP in 99 innings of work.
Sparkman owns an ERA of 6.60 ERA along with 1.60 WHIP in his previous three outings. Anticipate Wheeler to get a wonderful bounce back operation in this one later struggling to do his job against the Braves in his most recent outing. Sparkman might have an adequate afternoon, but he probably is not likely to be able to keep up with Wheeler inside this area.
