“Against Elina, she’s a tough player to allow me to play and I have had a lot of difficulties against her as well,” explained the Brit during her press conference after her fourth round victory.
“She’s incredibly stubborn and a huge competitor. I would be going out there expecting it to be a challenging match, anticipating her to be there in the very beginning to the end and wanting to compete well against her”
Despite meting the player four times Konta has yet to taste success. The two players’ most-recent meeting was in Montreal this past year and encounters’ quartet have come on hard courts.
In the corner of Konta establishes a record of having won 17 of her 20 matches this past year. It is a tally that others could boast, yet she is not putting it down to anything.
“I think normally, three-set records or being effective in three places, comes from playing a lot of matches too,” Konta shared.
“I don’t necessarily think that it’s anything specific. I expect myself to be out there on court for as long as desired and to play with the games for as long as I need to.
“I really don’t sense any time pressure to be off the court in certain amount of time so maybe I feel comfortable out there for 3 sets.
“No matter the game asks of me, I am prepared to be out there and play as long as I want to – I will either do or I won’t.”
In November this past year, the 28-year-old announced Dimitri Zavialoff as her trainer. The formal appointment of zavialoff accompanied by the divide of Konta with Michael Joyce also came following a trial period.
Despite early-stage losses over the courts of Toronto and Cincinnati, Konta’s effort at Flushing Meadows has seen her boom with Zavialoff seeing on.
When asked to pinpoint the greatest contribution that she has been given to by her trainer, the Brit took some time to consider before answering.
“Probably the biggest thing that he has brought to me is space. Space for exactly who I am and who I need to be in court,” that the 28-year-old said.
“He has encouraged my self-development in my way. His has a great understanding of committing a player room to grow and nurturing in this manner. That’s allowed us to operate.
“I am also really thankful to him for creating a environment, together with Dan and the rest of the team, of delight.
“I’m really excited to come to work today and to learn daily. That’s a very privileged position to maintain, in any job, I’m very thankful for this.”
The bliss of konta can be felt on court as she has combined this with medical tennis, and has looked more relaxed than ever before, dividing smiles mid-match.
The British No 1 has shown an ability to deliver greater number in her game and the result was a march through the rounds which has turned her opponents’ heads.
“On a personal to be able to make the quarters for my next Slam in a row, I believe that’s a really major achievement for me so I’m quite delighted with this”, additional Konta.
