Jason Roy: We are determined to level Ashes series and I know where I need to improve in Test cricket
In his most recent Sky Sports column, Jason Roy discusses England’s Ashes disappointment, trying to improve along with the group’s decision to level the series at The Oval…
I am unashamedly, in all honesty. I went to bed before day five Manchester understanding that I had a lot to prove and needing to do that. I batted for an hour and a half, was feeling good and beginning to believe we would draw the Test so it was disappointing to get out.
Then for us to hold on so long as we did was incredible. We’ve lost the opportunity to recover the Ashes however much struggle was shown by us on the day and we have a chance. That could be a plus for us given the place we are in now if Australia quit having attracted the string, rather than won it.
We talked after the game and there was a lot of emotion, so people were down, all summer we’ve worked hard and to be in this circumstance, of course we’re down.
The first response was that we must flip around it in The Oval and make sure they leave with a draw, that is all that is on our heads, it’s certainly what is on my head. We wish to draw the series. If we could do that, against a Australia facet, on the rear of winning the World Cup, it may not be exactly what we needed but it is still a pretty good summer.
Batting in the middle-order I had more of a understanding of how I had to really go on my innings. I’d not done it earlier in red-ball cricket Intro I did not really know the ideal mindset to get.
At No 4 I could be and play, even though at the second innings the strategy was to bat all day and the number of runs wasn’t significant, it was balls faced. Then, I was at the very first over.
I am the first to criticise myself and I know that I have got a lot of work to do. I’m going in since I understand what I need to do in order to improve as a Test cricketer although it’s an optional training session today and I must work on these matters.
It doesn’t matter whether you’re starting the batting or batting lower down the order, you have to be a whole lot tighter.
I think I got out to balls that were good at Old Trafford the one I have in second innings from Pat Cummins. There has been a whole lot of talk concerning my violin being a very long way off from my pad but if the ball had not have seamed as much as it did so it is irrelevant where my foot would be it would have hit my bat.
I’m just getting my head around exactly what I want to work on, perhaps not being too tough while being honest with myself. I have got a Excellent relationship with Graham Thorpe as a trainer, and away from the area for a friend.
He is ready to be frank with me and I am ready to be honest with him so I’ll put some work that is great and find out where I end up. I’ve still got plenty of work to perform, although I was a little more comfy at No 4.
In a series such as the Ashes you are playing. Back in Manchester, it had been the time confront so or seven overs and that I have had to go in at the end of the day.
I am proud of the way I’ve dealt with that situation and it is a case of having some big runs on the board. I can manage that environment and that pressure, but I’ve got to set some big scores on the plank simply because.
Nobody is shying away from the fact that the Australian group are incredible, players like Cummins and Steve Smith have been still on top of the ranks for a reason. Individuals could say’Jason Roy is useless’ but what about the bowlers I am facing? I really don’t need to have too downhearted since I know that the bowlers we are facing now are as good as any you will confront in Test cricket.
However, if you are a batsman for England, mediocre isn’t good enough, then you need to be the best you can be, the best about, that’s what we want. That’s precisely why we have been powerful because be the finest on earth and everybody wishes to better themselves, be pleased with only an OK series and nobody would like to settle.
Rory Burns was a excellent example of that at the Test side. He’s worked extremely hard and he’s remained level throughout his Test career for the time so far, nothing appears to faze him. For him to come to a series like this and perform as well as he’s, when a handful of us are not doing as well as we should be doing, is very pleasing to see, especially as he’s someone I have known for so many years.
Really establish a point and rory will want to go big in this game. He deserves it and I understand he will be working for this.
I delivered to me and said I needed a Spurs shirt and they’ve been ridiculously generous! I am now a fully-fledged Tottenham fan and the small one was in her shirt this afternoon, so that she was happy. This is a surprise but I will wait to get a win and hopefully some runs then I can ask for some more snacks!
