The Sebastian Vettel of ferrari produced a performance to take pole position.
It had been the first rod because the Canadian Grand Prix of Vettel in June and halted a run of nine races being out-qualified by team-mate Charles Leclerc.
Even the 21-year-old Monegasque, that has taken pole at the previous four races, was second, 0.189 minutes behind.
Mercedes Valtteri Bottas and Lewis Hamilton were third and fourth, possibly over 0.2secs from the Ferraris.
Red Bulls Max Verstappen and Alexander Albon were fifth and sixth, setting exactly the identical lap time, 0.787secs off the pace, an enormously impressive performance in the Anglo-Thai on his first visit Suzuka.
But the storyline was Vettel, that has struggled somewhat under the challenge of Leclerc in the next half of the season but revived memories of some of his greatest performances at an illustrious career with two laps enough for pole position.
Vettel revelled in his own execution following a tricky session where drivers were confronted with gusting winds, a hangover out of Typhoon Hagibis, that forced qualifying to be delayed until race morning.
Vettel explained:Were very surprised. We did not expect to have the front row. It was unbelievable, the automobile being so mild and on fresh tyres and wed mind wind through the Esses that is what you want. I dont think I touched the wheels (there) besides Turn Two.
Leclerc accelerating on to the straight and was threatening him his final lap before he made some mistakes at the chicane but confessed that Vettel was just too great for him.
Seb did a remarkable lap, Leclerc said, and today he just deserves to be on pole. Ive been a bit. However, I have been fairly satisfied with my lap. But to be honest, pole was potential, Seb was simply too quick.
Leclerc said that he had been wary of the danger against the Mercedes cars at the race.
Mercedes are very quick at the race, he stated, and it is not going to be easy but we will attempt to concentrate on our job and maintain this one-two.
Mercedes had mastered but felt that Ferrari held something in reserve and so it proved.
Bottas, that has appeared quicker than Hamilton all weekend, stated:We seemed quite robust but we always knew Ferrari could have something to flip up. Through the straights theyre unbeatable. But were fast through the corners
The conditions led to 2 drivers crashing out as Williams driver Robert Kubica and Haas Kevin Magnussen equally management in the last corner in the early part of qualifying, in exactly the exact same region.
Kubica ran wide onto the grass and understeered in the barriers, while Magnussen spun and hit the hurdles backwards, but he managed to get his car back.
Both teams face a race against time to find the cars ready in the short period before the race begins at 14:10 local time (06:10 BST).
