Iridessa irresistible in Matron Stakes
Iridessa bounced back to Group One-winning form from the Coolmore’Fastnet Rock’ Matron Stakes.
Joseph O’Brien’s three-year-old was prevailing for the time at the very top level as she reduced the colors, among others, of Laurens – coming from defence of the crown that won 12 months ago.
Iridessa, after finishing seventh in the Irish Oaks at the Curragh two months before, delivered off, also revealed too good on this event for Aidan O’Brien’s dual Guineas heroine Hermosa, who was a three-quarter-length second.
Even-money favourite Laurens set out to control from the front, as she often has to telling effect.
However, Hermosa was still on her situation during, nosing facing two furlongs out until an irresistible late charge was produced by Iridessa beneath Wayne Lordan, who’d ridden her all to her Group One cries.
Karl Burke’s British raider Laurens vanished to finish a fourth of seven.
O’Brien stated:”It is amazing. The filly was tough and she was given a ride by Wayne. We’re over the moon.
“We had been toying around with unique excursions, we weren’t certain what her trip was. She conducted over a mile earlier OK in the calendar year, we went 10 furlongs and she even won.
“She ran well in the Oaks, but it was a really messy race, they proceeded very slow and sprinted up the straight so we place a line through that.
“She is a terrific filly, she seems to love it if there is a little bit of pace on in front of her and she has something to operate at. I am thrilled for the owners.
“She’s a home-bred. Mum and dad bought that and the mare is the second foal from her. She has some younger animals coming along and this really can be a great boost.
“It’s extremely important to find these Group Ones and this filly was a real flag-bearer for us that season.
“The Prix p l’Opera was what we had in the back of our minds. Initially we were thinking about running at the Blandford, however, there was not too large a field as we believed we arrived .”
