Gareth Southgate comments anger Bulgarian FA ahead of England return game in Sofia
The Bulgarian Football Union has described Gareth Southgate’s racism concerns as”groundless, improper and unnecessary”.
Speaking in the aftermath of an alleged episode through England’s 4-0 triumph over Bulgaria in Wembley previous weekend, manager Southgate said civic abuse was a”concern” before the return match in Sofia in October.
Sky Sports also understand england’s players to get held discussions over whether to walk off the pitch in future if some of them are that the subject of comments.
But the BFU has already written to UEFA and Southgate’s supervisor, Football Association chairman Greg Clarke, to state its unhappiness in his comments.
Southgate’s words came following Raheem Sterling was abuse at Wembley last Saturday’s goal.
Following a rejoicing overheard him making an alleged remark involving the Manchester City forward during the 26, an away supporter was ejected in the floor.
“Yes, it is a concern,” Southgate said about the return match. “It is something that we have already planned.
“We have already planned our program looks like and we are going to talk about it with all the players before we proceed, because we’re aware that there is background there and we wish to be sure that we’re all ready for what could happen and exactly how we want to respond”
The following month’s qualifier will be England’s first visit to Bulgaria because September 2011, if there was a 3-0 triumph overshadowed by racist abuse in Sofia.
Ashley Young was exposed to monkey chants during that game, but the Bulgarian Football Union only got a 40,000 euros (Number 35,500) fine by UEFA for”discriminatory” chanting and to get its lighting and throwing of fireworks.
However, the BFU has responded to the comments of Southgate.
“The president of the Bulgarian Football Union Borislav Mihaylov sent a formal letter into the UEFA General Secretary Mr. Theodore Theodoridis along with also the chairman of the English FA Mr. Greg Clarke expressing his indignation and disappointment after the public comments from Mr. Gareth Southgate and the suggestions that the English players will soon be subject to racial abuse by the Bulgarian fans in the approaching European qualifier in Sofia on October 14th,” a statement read.
“The BFU viewpoints such behavior as groundless, improper and unnecessary before the important and exciting soccer game which Bulgarian lovers happen to be looking to in the past calendar year.
“We have not got any official information concerning discriminatory language utilized by a Bulgarian supporter in Wembley Stadium.
“Even if this had been the case, however, we believe that generalisations and the creation of needless tension by documented members of this English team is totally unacceptable and in contradiction with the spirit of mutual respect and fair play, the center values of the UEFA and the BFU.”
The Vasil Levski National Stadium will be partly closed for the most recent visit because of the racist behaviour of their fans of England from the loss from the Czech Republic in June.
At least 5,000 chairs will be unused for Southgate’s men’s trip and can display a banner with the wording’#EqualGame’.
Bulgaria’s return fixture against the Czechs can also be expected to be played in a floor due to racist behaviour in the 3-2 home loss to Kosovo in their June fixture.
