Eddie Jones says England will not fall for Argentina mind games
Eddie Jones insists England are too wise to be outwitted with Argentina’s claim that his negative and dull rugby play with.
Pumas hooker Agustin Creevy created the quip ahead of their Pool C showdown at the Tokyo Stadium, where victory will see England progress to the quarter-finals of this tournament.
Jones remembers after being calmed by Australia, who proceeded to triumph 12-6 in 38, the 1991 World Cup final when the team of Will Carling withdrew in favour of a more expansive game.
“It’s the old two-card suggestion, another one of the fantastic old trainers, Bob Dwyer at 1991, threw out that one and there was a reply then from the England side,” Jones stated.
“Perhaps if they had not played like that they would have two World Cups on their sleeves. There are many different ways to play the game.
“I provide a book and you also think it is interesting, I donate it to somebody else and he believes it is rubbish, so what’s right? Nothing is ideal.
“Find a way to play the game effectively – that is the excellent thing about our sport. We all know what we’re good at.”
Mako Vunipola and wing Jack Nowell are prepared to create their Japan 2019 debuts off the bench against Argentina getting recovered from hamstring and shoulder injuries respectively.
Vunipola has played only 17 minutes of rugby since May 11 after his comeback against Ireland during the warm-up Tests was aborted because of damaged scar tissue, but he is now ready to combine his brother Billy in the bunch.
“Mako, in his best, is just about the best loosehead in the world and also to possess the calmness that he brings,” Jones added.
“He is a senior counselor for our team. We have a group that was reasonably young and Mako has that calmness.
“You have always got two brothers from Mako and Billy and a little more volatile, the other is a bit more settled, so Mako was always up at the front together with the parents and Billy was at the back, crying.
“Billy is wonderful for us because he has got that fire and temperament and you want that out of the number eight.
“You look at the history of the World Cups and they have been won by large number eights.”
