Eddie Jones says England have plans if Typhoon Faxai hits Rugby World Cup
England coach Eddie Jones has warned that the typhoon sweeping across Asia might have a major disruption on the World Cup but says he’s contingency plans in place to deal with it.
Typhoon Faxai moved shore on the Pacific towards Japan on Saturday, threatening to make landfall near Tokyo the Japan Meteorological Agency said.
England are due to leave Japan on Sunday along with the season typhoon – packing winds up to 180kph – will be predicted to reach regions of the Kanto area between Sunday and early Monday.
Tournament organisers have planned for the possibility of needing to relocate teams or perhaps to transfer matches to venues.
The stadiums from Tonga in Sapporo and the United States in Kobe, have roofs and Jones claims that the team will train indoors on artificial turf.
“It is going to impact the World Cup, there’s no doubt about it,” Jones said after his side’s 37-0 win over Italy at England’s closing warm-up match in Newcastle.
“You’ve just got to ride with it, be elastic and figure out how you can handle the circumstance.
“Once the typhoon comes, you simply can’t go outside. It is basically a lock-down. It may vary between being violent to very mild.
“The matter is that can not go outdoors but we have got ideas of what we do whether a typhoon ceased us training outdoors. We are going to instruct on artificial turf indoors.”
Jones is preparing for a noticeable change in conditions, after enjoying with four warm-up games on dry pitches.
Jones, who has a mother that is Japanese-American and is married to Hiroko Jones, a Western girl he met while teaching in Sydney, is knowledgeable about the perils, having lived for extended periods in Japan.
He coached club teams in Japan before being appointed in 2012.
“South Africa played Japan [on Friday] and it was quite hot and very humid,” he explained. “There was plenty of dropped ball, it had been quite fatty, which could increase the amount of hanging”
