Dylan Hartley kept awake at night over omission from England’s World Cup squad
Former England captain Dylan Hartley admits his omission from Eddie Jones’ World Cup squad is still causing him to have.
The Northampton hooker was left out of the 31-man squad for the championship of England, having neglected to overcome.
Hartley, that has 97 caps for England, had hoped to bow from international rugby to a top in Japan, and is coming to terms with being denied the opportunity to achieve that.
“After the World Cup squad was announcedit was almost like I’d died – friends touch base and seeing when I was OK,” Hartley said.
“Finally, the way I looked in my whole rugby career and the way I wanted it to flake out, and also how it was goingwas that this could have become the ultimate send-off, the fantasy end to an worldwide career.
“The reality is you pick up an injury.
“For four years we’ve talked about winning the World Cup with Eddie, and I have headed that team, been part of that travel, to fall at the final hurdle… I don’t know the sensation.
“I wake up many nights thinking about it. It doesn’t sit well with me, but I have come to terms with it. You have to crack .”
Hartley believes England have a superb chance of being the team which lifts the Webb Ellis Cup in Yokohama City on November 2, and that his omission to manage.
“I genuinely think England (will win), they’ve got as good a chance to go and get it done,” he explained.
“The worst thing for me is to think if my leg wasn’t [hurt ] at the moment I could be there together , winning a World Cup. It is not easy to swallow, really.
“I expect they go and win. I will get on and become a beauty supporter – recall me guys?
“I will be hanging from the side of this open-top bus, in my 97th (look ) shirt”
Hartley hasn’t featured since representing club Northampton at a Gallagher Premiership clash with Worcester nine months ago.
The 33-year-old admits he aggravated his knee injury.
“I attempted an (initial) strategy with my knee, a very aggressive strategy, since I had been given some deadlines to meet, along with the aggressive strategy didn’t work,” said Hartley.
“I basically ended up at a worse place for attempting to come back too early. Ever since that happened, I knew I wasn’t going to make the (World Cup) deadline.
“It was about the beginning of the camps, when they first got together around the beginning of July. I tried getting back for this and basically put myself in a tiny hole emotionally and physically.”
Hartley recently spent a fortnight working together with strength and conditioning specialist Bill Knowles, whose clients include Andy Murray, also feels that therapy was beneficial.
“Everybody asks when you’re coming back but I’ve learned that you do not put a time frame on it, because when you’re 10 days out from it and you know you are nowhere close, you are able to play these games in your head and it is hard,” Hartley additional.
“In the present time, I am building my tolerance to be able to run daily and participate daily.”
