The UFC welterweight division was turned upside down on the weekend in UFC 235, as Kamaru Usman completely ruled Tyron Woodley to become the new titleholder in 170lbs. The odds had Usman recorded as a significant underdog, but he demonstrated the chances wrong as he absolutely dominated the fight from bell to bell and became the newest UFC welterweight champion. And now, we understand what the next challenge is going to be to your new champ.
In accordance with UFC president Dana White, Usman won’t make his first title defense at a rematch against Woodley. Instead, Usman will take on former interim champ Colby Covington next. Over the weekend video emerged of Covington monitoring down White at a Las Vegas casino and demanding a title shot. In accordance with both Covington and White, once the cameras were turned off they had a fantastic discussion as grown men, and made amends for their public spat over Covington maybe not getting the title shot against Woodley.
White says that Covington will take on Usman, and it’s likely this struggle will take place sometime in the summer, possibly at International Fight intersection this July in Las Vegas, or maybe on the UFC’s pay-per-view card in Chicago in August. Usman didn’t take any damage whatsoever in the Woodley struggle, and Covington is healthy as well, therefore the UFC should not have any trouble getting this battle booked as soon as possible. Considering how stagnant the welterweight division was at times when Woodley was the champ, it is going to be nice to see Usman keep on a busy schedule as champ. At his current pace, he’ll hopefully fight three occasions this year.
As far as the Usman vs. Covington fight goes, it promises to have tremendous promotion leading up to it since both guys are excellent talkers from the media. As for the matchup itself, it is a battle between two of the greatest wrestlers at 170lbs. In the event that you’d asked me to lineup this struggle one year ago, I’d have contributed Covington a small nod. But after seeing what Usman didn’t Woodley, you absolutely need to see Usman recorded as a big favorite. At this point, I believe the oddsmakers would need to open up Usman as at a 2-to-1 favored, if not more. What he did to Woodley was pure domination, as fantastic as Covington was himself in the UFC,” Usman has looked even better.
UFC Wants Jones vs. Santos Next
White reported the UFC wants to book Jon Jones against Thiago Santos for the UFC light heavyweight title . Jones had a bit of a scare in his fight against Anthony Smith as he lost his belt caused by DQ because of an illegal knee of a downed opponent, but he ended up winning a lopsided decision at the conclusion of the five rounds. If asked by reporters if Jones could fight Brock Lesnar next, White reported the UFC would like to reserve Santos from Jones. Santos is coming off of a dazzling KO over Jan Blachowicz and has gone 3-0 as a light heavyweight, so he is more than deserving of combating Jones. Hopefully that struggle is reserved shortly, since Jones took no harm against Smith also it would be nice to see him remain on a busy scheduled in 2019 and fight a couple more times too.
