Chelsea boss Frank Lampard wary of Manchester United in Carabao Cup
Chelsea manager Frank Lampard believes home advantage could be crucial in their own side’s Carabao Cup fourth-round associate with Manchester United, but is wary of underestimating their out-of-form opponents.
Chelsea thrashed Grimsby 7-1 on Tuesday Wednesday to provide Lampard his initial success at Stamford Bridge since taking charge in July in the club where he spent the bulk of his playing career.
United, who have won just once in the league since beating Chelsea 4-0 about the opening weekend of this season, struggled to some penalty-shootout victory over League One Rochdale at Old Trafford.
“I was only viewing the penalties. It is a major draw, two major teams and I am happy we are in your home. We’ll see,” Lampard said of this tie, that will take place on the week beginning October 28.
“I think a lot can happen in football in a limited while. Tomorrow the round isn’t coming. We have to respect the fact that they have great players.
“They beat us 4-0… so I’m surely not going to stay here and talk Individual United down.
“It is going to be a tough game, and the beauty of the things we did in Wednesday night was make the sport look pretty straightforward.
“However, these matches can be hard and I would preferably, from a space and never not watched the match, provide Rochdale credit for carrying them all the way. Man United will bring a strong team here.”
Ross Barkley started the scoring for Chelsea after just four minutes, before Michy Batshuayi’s brace, Pedro’s punishment, Kurt Zouma, Reece James and Callum Hudson-Odoi completed the rout.
But the larger picture was Lampard handing debuts to four academy graduates in addition to a very first launch for Billy Gilmour.
Gilmour was a stand-out performer in midfield and fellow rookies James and Marc Guehi also impressed, while there was a welcome return for England winger Hudson-Odoi, his first appearance since picking up an Achilles injury in April.
After Lampard sent on two more debutants as substitutes, Tino Anjorin along with also Ian Maatsen, the Blues ended the night with six academy starlets about the pitch.
“I am happy some players who have not been playing so many minutes playedthere have been a few debuts, and also the young lads who came on improved the team that was fine,” Lampard added.
