The flashy former Ryder Cup golfer Brian Barnes has died aged 74 after a short illness from cancer.
He was known for beating against Jack Nicklaus twice in a day.
Barnes won 20 titles and played for Ireland and Great Britain and then Europe in six Ryder Cups between 1969 and 1979.
He represented Scotland in group events and recorded three top-10 endings.
Barnes became the first person to defend the title and won the British Open in 1995.
Paying tribute following his passing, brother-in-law Guy Faulkner, stated:”It was very surprising. I played a round of golf with him in May and he also played 18 holes with no difficulty whatsoever.”
At the 1975 Ryder Cup at Pennsylvania, Barnes conquer reigning Masters and US PGA champion Jack Nicklaus 2 & 4 in the afternoon singles.
Nicklaus was eager and asked US captain Arnold Palmer to make it occur.
On the first tee Nicklaus kindly told his competitor”There ai not no way you are going to conquer ” but Barnes triumphed 1 & 2, although the US proceeded to win the Ryder Cup.
