Australia’s most successful fast bowler in Test cricket, glenn McGrath, has combined the BBC for its 2019 Ashes series. He will be part of this Test Match Special commentary team and provide a regular column.
Retaining the Ashes in England for first time since 2001 is enormously important after the previous 18 months for Australian cricket.
They can now put what happened in South Africa together with the ball-tampering scandal well and truly behind them.
Ever since that time, they have been clawing their way back. They’ve been getting the Australian public’s support as well as regaining that self-belief and beginning to play well as a unit.
To come to England and retain the Ashes using a Exam would be the part of the procedure.
Australia can just concentrate on the future. The past is the past.
I was part of the last side to win in 2001 in England and visiting Tim Paine’s staff maintain the urn was so amazing.
Since then Australia have never been in England at the contest, although the 2005 series that we lost 2-1 was enormous.
Winning here is still the greatest for any Australia cricketer since England are tough to beat in their problems.
That is what Australia achieving this will be unique for this group and concentrated on this summer.
I wanted Australia to use how badly they felt then stunning defeat at Headingley as inspiration for the Test and they did.
They have been devastated after the Leeds Test – because I wanted to demonstrate my support, I went into the dressing area.
I told them they were playing with some cricket despite these outplaying England and that it had been 1-1.
They arrived together and will have said 50% was down to an incredible innings from Ben Stokes and that 50 percent of that defeat was down to missed chances.
They did not allow it to impact them moving as shown by their cricket in Manchester, learned from what occurred and set it in perspective.
Paine has really done a good job. Steve Smith is a pioneer also, and trainer Justin Langer will possess amazed discipline and esteem to his team – things which are really important to him.
The victory in the Test was a legitimate sign of where the show reaches. England struggled carrying only 14 wickets, and they didn’t bat well.
Stuart Broad has stepped up in James Anderson, that was a huge blow to England’s lack. Broad has been class, as has Stokes.
However, England have been held collectively Broad and by Stokes. Take them and they have been belted by Australia in this sequence.
A lot was made of Jofra Archer when things are good, but you can’t just fire it up. You’ve got to do the hard yards as well, and I’m yet to see him do the hard yards.
Archer can look to the example of Australia’s Pat Cummins and Josh Hazlewood, that have been impressive.
Cummins is your number one Test bowler in the world because of this. He simply keeps delivering.
It was a wonder he didn’t take a wicket because incredible 10-over spell either side of tea.
However, since a bowler you know that in the event you keep bowling like that, wickets are not far off – and he obtained the important dismissals of Joe Root and Rory Burns on Saturday evening.
Burns was a little unlucky but that ball to Root would have got out anyone and taking away the opposition captain if Root hasn’t played that well this series, is obviously key.
When India toured Australia this past 11, I talked to Virat Kohli and he stated he was given more trouble than another bowler by Cummins.
Hazlewood missed the first Test at Edgbaston. He did at Lord’s and arrived. But at Headingley and Old Trafford that he had been exceptional.
He picked up those 3 wickets following Cummins’ spell day three and receives a little more rebound.
However, both bowl in locations that are fantastic and give the batsmen no balls. They’re bowlers.
And you’ve got Smith. He is incredible. His double century in the first innings was astounding but then he endorsed it when Australia have been in a tough place at 44-4 in their second innings.
He is flexible – I can not recall any other batsman having the ability to change his match depending on the circumstance.
Even with a slightly unconventional technique on first appearance, he is well balanced and his hands and the bat encounter through every time.
He would like to bat all day , just gets inside his bubble is mentally strong. He’s quite special.
The Ashes are moving back down under but Australia will be decided to win the series 3-1 with victory in the fifth Test at The Oval, beginning on Thursday.
It will be intriguing to find out what they do with their staff – will they stay with the David Warner that is fighting? I am not sure there are choices.
They’ll discuss this summer whether to rest.
But they may well decide to go in for the kill and keep on with the identical team.
Glenn McGrath spoke to BBC Sport’s Jack Skelton.
